The market for experienced business development and capture managers has never been tighter – but we still won’t come into a company to run a key capture for them. Why is that? Because my experience with outsourced capture managers has solidified my distaste and distrust of that model.
Even in very large companies, when our “outsourced” capture support came from a centralized corporate team, or another business unit – it NEVER worked out optimally. If your company is dying for good BD and Capture, we suggest you 1) look within first for someone who knows, understands and is dedicated to your growth or 2) hire for personality/culture and then train/mentor the skills you’re looking for. We can help with the evaluation, training program and mentoring – but we won’t take on your projects for you because that is really just throwing money at short term solution.
Wait what – fun?
Yes – really – well run capture and orals projects are a lot of fun. If your experience is different from that, you probably had the wrong people involved or didn’t provide the resources needed to be successful. It hurts my heart when I talk to people that could be highly capable capture managers and hear that they “hate capture because…” Similarly – folks who have been through a Federal oral presentation may have a visceral reaction from the harsh coaching and ridiculous demands placed on them.
It’s up to companies to break the cycle of allowing capture and orals teams to be hell-bent death marches, and we can help you teach your team a better way.
